Reclamation Street market, Hong Kong

Reclamation Street
The other day while walking through the Reclamation Street market in Yau Ma Tei in Hong Kong, I came across this scene. It is what it is.
Young Woman Reading
This is one of those images that says everything and yet, says nothing. It’s somewhat subliminal, it’s somewhat ethereal. Other than that, it’s nothing more than a snap shot of a young woman sitting in a market stall reading a book.
All judgements expressed here are somewhat subjective as I’m not sure what else to say about this image or, the subject for that matter.
As the reader of this post and viewed of this image, It’s up to you to explore and discover whatever it is that’s framed or reflected in this image.
In context, and here one needs to look at the bigger picture, this woman represents something of a generational shift that’s happening in this and other fresh produce markets around Hong Kong. There’s every likelihood here that this young woman’s parents man and work this stall to support her and perhaps her siblings and to put them through school and college.
That she is here reading her book may be incidental. Her parents and /or the stall owners maybe away elsewhere. Or, that she could be working here either part or full time? I don’t know, I didn’t ask. The picture came first, the questions and the answers may come later.
As for the “bigger picture”, it’s out there. This is something I may address in later posts.
Enjoy. Comments and queries are welcome.
TECHNICAL NOTES: This image was taken using a Fujifilm X-T1 digital capture device coupled with a Fujinon Super EBC XF 18-55 f/2.8-4 R LM OIS lens.
